The Bible Brigade needs to be exposed as the danger they are to Democracy. A historical trip down memory lane is essential to illustrate the danger they present to Progressive Democratic countries like Canada because "This isn’t the religious right we thought we knew. The Christian nationalist movement today is authoritarian, paranoid and patriarchal at its core. They aren’t fighting a culture war. They’re making a direct attack on democracy itself."
Conservatives perpetuate a myth that we are over-taxed, that high taxes are bad, deficits are bad, and that we don’t want to leave our grandchildren our debt burden. Enough already: it's all BS! Our debt-to-GDP ratio is the lowest in the G7 and our current economic measures with the Liberal Government is why it's continuing to drop.
Conservative economics drives and exacerbates income inequality. Their neoliberal ideology (Socialism for the Wealthy) started in the UK with Thatcher, the U.S. with Reagan, went into hyper-drive with Stephen Harper, and is in full swing in Ontario with Doug Ford. Alberta has followed with Jason Kenney's tax cuts for wealthy corporations that are already paying the lowest taxes in Canada.
"Beneath that cerebral, taciturn exterior, however, one detects an insecure, hapless control freak, quick to sulk when he doesn’t get his way, shy, awkward, and deeply repressed."
Some people tell lies to conceal the truth; the Conservatives tell lies because they have forgotten what the truth is.
It's important to understand why Conservatives have succumbed to Tribalism, Fake News, and are often anti-science, anti-data, anti-elites (i.e. experts), and anti-evidence-based-decision-making. Their ideology in Canada today is steeped in the history of Stephen Harper's influence on the Party and his belief in American Republicanism. The effects of Harper's Social Conservatism had an enormous effect … Continue reading Conservative ideology is rife with attacks on Science and Data
Stephen Harper expressed open hostility about “Liberal courts” and “Liberal bureaucracy” when first elected. His first move to force his ideology on the DOJ was the "elimination of the Court Challenges Program and the Law Commission of Canada as well as budget cuts to numerous organizations with human rights and equality mandates."
The toxic polarization we are seeing with Conservatives today was introduced by Stephen Harper, a Republican ideologue. He governed for his base only. Remind you of someone? Our Charter was the only thing that stood in the way of an Autocratic ruler who would have subverted our Democracy to his whims.
If a Billion-$ industry can be easily blockaded by the chump change of NGOs, perhaps oil and pipeline companies which can outspend them 100-1 need new CEOs?
"Alberta isn’t a victim of unfair treatment. Rather, much of what is lamented today is a side effect of Alberta’s economic strength. Especially when it comes to equalization. No tweak to a program meant to transfer funds to lower income provinces should ever transfer to the richest."
Conservative collusion with the oil industry, stacking the NEB with industry insiders, & gutting Canada’s environmental protections led to the failure of Northern Gateway, the creation of Idle No More, and entrenched pipeline opposition....
Stephen Harper's arrogance sealed the fate of Northern gateway pipeline, not the Liberals. CBC needs to challenge all Conservatives who lie that PM Trudeau killed Gateway & that Prem Notley gave her blessing. The court overturned it! Flaws were many. Opposition was insurmountable: the late Premier Prentice knew NG wouldn't proceed at Kitimat
In politics, we now live in a “post-truth” world of wicked polarization “alternative facts” and “fake news”! “A defining trait of post-truth politics is that campaigners continue to repeat their talking points, even when media outlets, experts in the field in question, and others provide proof that contradicts these talking points.”
